Erasmus+ Exchange in Sicily: A Week of Sustainability and Friendship
From April 7 to 11, 2025, we, a group of six Year 9 students, took part in the second international meeting of the Erasmus+ project Ecology and Sustainability across Cultures in Spadafora, Sicily.
The project is co-funded by the European Union through the Erasmus+ programme and brings together schools from Luxembourg/Germany, Portugal, Poland, and Italy to learn about sustainability across borders.
Exploring Science, Nature, and Culture Together
Our week started at Galileo Galilei High School in Spadafora with a warm welcome and a presentation of the programme. We joined science and sports workshops in mixed international teams, where we analysed soil samples in the lab (SDG 15 – Life on Land) and took part in physical activities to promote mental and physical well-being (SDG 3 and 4).
On Tuesday, we visited the castle and sea museum (MuMa) in Milazzo, where we learned about marine pollution and the tragic story of a sperm whale affected by plastic (SDG 14 – Life Below Water). Later, we enjoyed an orienteering activity through the historic upper town.
In Messina, we explored the Thalassographic Institute and the Capo Peloro Lagoon, a unique nature reserve where two seas meet. We studied fish anatomy, learned about the marine ecosystem, and saw how science connects with environmental protection (SDG 14 and 8).
Thursday took us to Catania, where we visited the Etna Observatory and learned how volcanologists monitor Sicily’s active volcanoes (SDG 15 and 8). After a walking tour of the city and a delicious lunch, we celebrated the week with a farewell dinner in the evening.
Working Together and Making Connections
On the last day, we worked in pairs to create a website that documented our shared experiences. This project helped us use digital tools creatively and reflect on what we had achieved together during the exchange.
Looking back, we had a fantastic week full of learning, fun, and cultural exchange. We spoke a lot of English, made many new friends, and shared unforgettable moments with students from across Europe.
